About Laura (she/her/hers)

I’m Laura, a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in North Carolina.

I’ve been practicing psychotherapy and clinical social work since May 2016, after earning my Masters in Social Work from UNC – Chapel Hill. As a clinical social worker and therapist, I provide support to adult clients around a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, life transitions, identity concerns, grief, trauma, and relationship concerns (including intimate partner violence).

Work History

  • Post-MSW Fellow at Emory University’s Counseling and Psychological Services (Atlanta, GA): 2016-2018

  • Therapist and Outreach Coordinator at Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA): 2018-2019

  • Clinical Social Worker and Therapist at MindPath Care Centers (Durham, NC): 2019-2020

  • Owner and Clinical Social Worker/Therapist at Laura Morrison LCSW PLLC (Durham, NC): January 2021 - current

When I’m not in the office, I enjoy free time with my partner, my daughter, and my pets. I love eating, cooking, and baking … and watching shows related to – you guessed it – eating, cooking and baking. The “Iain’s binned it” moment of Great British Baking Show is the pinnacle of reality TV, in my humble opinion.

In addition to food-related hobbies, I enjoy reading, podcast-listening, coffee-drinking, and an occasional Netflix binge (Schitt’s Creek, anyone?!).

My Therapeutic Approach

My approach to therapy borrows from cognitive behavioral therapy, emotion-focused therapy, attachment theory, feminist theory, and interpersonal therapeutic approaches. I lean heavily on interventions and techniques from Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP). This generally means that in therapy sessions we will:

  • Identify the ways your thoughts and beliefs influence your feelings;

  • Gain an understanding of how various identities you hold - visible and invisible - intersect with the environment you’re in, and how those intersections might impact your current concerns;

  • Explore events from your past that have informed your beliefs (about yourself, others, and the world) and that shape your current functioning;

  • Examine how important past relationships impact your current relationships, beliefs, and day-to-day functioning;

  • Uncover patterns in your relationships – past and current – and work to shed ways of relating to others that no longer serve you;

  • Focus on clarifying and expressing your feelings, since emotions are an essential source of information about yourself;

  • Sit with and explore the full range of your emotions during session; and

  • Amplify the strengths, resources, and wisdom you have that, as your strengths are the foundation of your own growth, healing, and connection.

Our Therapeutic Relationship + Commitment to Inclusion and Equity

Underpinning all of my therapeutic work is a strong focus on building a warm, collaborative and trusting relationship with clients; I believe this relationship is the catalyst for change in the therapy process. Most importantly, I aim to create a therapeutic space that is identity-affirming, safe, and inclusive for clients of all identities and backgrounds.

I am committed to cultivating an anti-racist, anti-oppression practice that makes space for examining the ways in which oppression, discrimination, and inequity impact my clients. I am also committed to an ongoing examination of my own identities and privileges, and how those identities and privileges impact me and shape my work as a therapist. I am open to exploring with clients areas where our identities intersect and where they diverge and how these differences and similarities show up in our therapeutic relationship.

Finally, I’m committed to continuing my professional and personal learning around anti-racism and anti-oppression (by attending continuing education trainings, by participating in peer supervision and consultation, and by working with my own therapist around these issues).
